Polygyny is the practice in which one man is allowed to have multiple wives. In the United States polygyny is frowned upon by many states and many other nations view it as an outdated form of marriage. Most commonly polygyny ist patriarchal or forced onto the women in the civilizations. This shows one key to keeping a marriage going and successful and it seems to go against the belief that the people in the relationship need to be happy to make the relationship work. If your force one person into a marriage and they do not want to be apart of that relationship or they do not want to be married to that man that already has two other wives, it will naturally cause hostility among the parties involved. It is thought that polygyny came about due to the fact of high risk male activities such as warfare and hunting caused a low population of males in a region. Typically men's social status lies on the size of his family and hence the number of wives he has. Men typically see the benefits in a relationship, such as when a man marries a woman he potentially has brothers in laws or fathers in law to call upon if help is needed. In a sense of mind the more wives you have the more resources that are available and the more opportunities for assistance become available.
Monogamy for example falls on the other end of the spectrum. A party is only allowed one spouse and the relationship usually comes to be after months or years of dating, and when they finally decide to they will get married. Many couples go through life learning things about one another and make many different financial decisions together. Unlike polygyny, monogamous marriage tend to marry for “love” whereas in polygyny they marry for financial resources. Those are the main differences between monogamy and polygyny.
