What is anthropology? What are the subfields of anthropology? Which subfield most interests you? Why?
Anthropology, as defined by Humanity- An Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, is the academic discipline that studies all of humanities. In Anthropology scientist specialized in anthropology are called anthropologists study many different aspects of human life. This includes the current species and all peoples past and present. There are four different subdivisions of anthropology. Archaeology is the excavations of material remains in prehistoric sights to reconstruct early ways of human life. We do this to learn about the historic literate peoples. A second section is physical and biological anthropology. In this aspect anthropologist compare the anatomy and behavior with other primate species to see similarities and differences. Cultural anthropology is the study of people in a certain area and community. Anthropological linguistics is the study of general study of language and culture, or the role of language and communicating in the community. In the past many anthropologist have spent the majority of their lives working in colleges, universities, or museums. Up until the early 1990 this was common among anthropologists, but since then it has been common among anthropologists to find careers in other types of institutions.
The field that most interests me is archeology. I have always enjoyed finding fossils of prehistoric animals and plants and have a great interest in archeology as a whole. I remember looking for arrowheads with my close family and have many fond memories doing so. I believe the lives of our forefathers and the people that were on the land before have strongly influenced our culture. With the ability to go back and look at the tools and remains of these people help us greatly understand their way of life.
What do you think of archeology and how does it help us in our culture now?
